Robert Brophy has been named the IRB's acting chief executive and the RWC Ltd's acting managing director.
Brophy, who is currently serving as the IRB's chief financial officer, will begin his new roles on February 1.
The Irishman's key responsibility will be to oversee the governing body's core business while the search for a permanent successor to Mike Miller is being conducted.
Miller's 10-year reign at the IRB comes to an end next Tuesday with a leading global recruitment company to be given the task of finding the right replacement.
"Robert has a massive wealth of experience in the organisation and global rugby governance and is highly respected by the staff," IRB chairman Bernard Lapasset said.
"I have every confidence that Robert will provide the continuity, stability and leadership required until a new permanent chief executive takes office."
