Cougars Turn Attention To Final Two Matches
2010-03-16 19:08:37

BYU's upcoming match with Weber State University has been canceled due to a scheduling conflict with the Utah Rugby Union's Division II Playoffs.

The match was set for 1pm this Saturday at South Field, but WSU had to pull out in order to participate in their respective divisional URU playoffs which were set only within the last month, long after a fixture with BYU had been arranged.

All 7 of the URU Div. II teams will be in Orem at Utah Valley University Friday and Saturday for the single-elimination tournament to decide who will represent the union at the Pacific Coast Regional Playoffs April 3-4.

"It's an unfortunate situation that we're in because of our small local league," said BYU head coach David Smyth, "But we'll roll with it and turn our attention to two very big games coming up next week."

The two games Smyth refers to are a rubber-match with the University of Utah on March 24th and a regular-season-finale with  San Diego State University.

The match with Utah will be a "friendly" between the two rivals at the MLS's Real Salt Lake Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, UT. Kick-off for that match is set for 7pm.

The Cougars beat Utah earlier this season 15-10 in the hotly contested Wasatch Cup. BYU didn't score a single try in that match will look to improve on that performance in hopes of a season sweep of their northern rival

A match between Division II rivals Utah Valley and Utah State will serve a curtain-raiser at 4.30pm. Advanced tickets for the "Utah Rugby College Showdown" can be purchased at www.riotintostadium.com.

BYU's final match of the regular season will be another re-match tilt with the Aztecs of SDSU. The Cougars and Aztecs faced off against each other in the 2009 semi-final with the Cougars coming from behind to win 31-13 after being down at halftime.

SDSU currently sits atop the Southern California Collegiate Premiership with a perfect 8-0 league season. The Aztecs' boast a full record of 10-1 with the lone loss coming against the Bears of Cal Berkeley at the Las Vegas Invitational.

Kickoff for the SDSU match is slated for March 27th at 1pm on South Field and will serve as Senior Day for the BYU Cougars. Tickets for the SDSU match can be bought at the gate. Prices are $7 for adults, $5 for students w/ ID, $3 for youth under 12. Groups and teams of 15 or more can also get in for just $3 per person. Fans who arrive before an hour early will receive $1 off the price of admission. Fans are urged to arrive early as seating will be limited.
