Sebastien Chabal has revealed a breakdown in relations with coach Pierre Berbizier has led to his departure from Top 14 side Racing Metro.
Former France international number eight Chabal revealed he was unhappy with the situation at the Paris club but did not criticise Berbizier or club president Jacky Lorenzetti.
Chabal told a press conference: "I was not happy. The cause? Communication with Pierre Berbizier.
"It's the end of a long ordeal. It's the end of a long punishment."
Chabal had been looking to sign a contract extension with the club but admitted the final straw was when he could not reach agreement with Lorenzetti.
The 34-year-old, who began his career at Bourgoin and also played for Sale Sharks in the English Premiership and won 62 caps for France, added: "I thank the president for allowing that things run as smoothly as possible so that we can move forward and rebuild the club and myself."
Chabal revealed he had not spoken to his Racing team-mates as they were on holiday.
"I have not seen anyone since they are on vacation. I have received text messages. I will tell them goodbye next week."
He revealed one regret upon his departure - not completing his playing contract at the club.
"I am disappointed not to finish a good player in Racing. But I want to look ahead and not behind."
Chabal, who can also play at lock or flanker, did not make France's World Cup squad or the Six Nations group ahead of the opener against Italy in Paris on Sunday.
He claims to have proposals from Japan, the southern hemisphere and France to continue his playing career.
